Using the wrong sugar-to-water ratio can harm hummingbirds. Stick to a 1:4 ratio of sugar to water for safe and nutritious feeding.
Avoid using honey or artificial sweeteners. These can cause digestive issues or harm hummingbirds. Only use plain white granulated sugar.
Clean your feeders regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Wash them every 3-5 days, especially in hot weather.
Don’t place feeders in direct sunlight. The nectar can spoil quickly. Instead, choose a shaded or partially shaded spot.
Avoid filling feeders to the top. Excess nectar can overflow and create a mess. Fill only 1/2 to 2/3 of the feeder to minimize spills.
Don’t forget to replace old nectar. Stale nectar can be harmful. Refresh the nectar every few days, especially during warmer months.
Avoid using red dye in nectar. It can be harmful to hummingbirds. The red color on feeders is sufficient for attracting them without added dye.
