How to make drip coffee at home – baristas spill the beans

Choose Quality Beans: Start with fresh, whole bean coffee. Look for high-quality beans and grind them just before brewing to preserve flavor.

Use the Right Grind Size: Aim for a medium grind, which is ideal for drip coffee makers. A consistent grind size ensures even extraction.

Measure Coffee and Water: The golden ratio is about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. Adjust according to your taste preference but maintain a balanced ratio.

Heat Your Water: Ensure your water temperature is between 195°F and 205°F (90°C - 96°C) for optimal extraction. Avoid boiling water, as it can scald the coffee.

Pre-Wet the Filter: Rinse your paper filter with hot water before adding coffee grounds. This removes any paper taste and pre-heats the brewing cone.

Bloom Your Coffee: Pour a small amount of hot water over the grounds to saturate them, allowing them to "bloom" for about 30 seconds before adding the rest of the water.

Brew Time: Let the coffee brew for about 4-6 minutes, depending on your machine and desired strength.
