Planting Green Onions
To plant green onions:
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Green onions need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Prepare the soil by mixing in compost or other organic matter to a depth of 6-8 inches. This provides nutrients for healthy growth.
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. For transplants, space them 4-6 inches apart.
Water the soil consistently, keeping it moist but not waterlogged. Green onions have shallow roots and need regular moisture.
Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid letting weeds compete with the onions
Growing Green Onions
Fertilize with a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2-3 weeks to provide nutrients for continued growth
Harvest green onions by cutting off the leaves as needed, leaving 1-2 inches of the stem above the soil. The plant will regrow.
For larger bulbs, hill soil around the stems as they grow to blanch the lower stems
Grow green onions in containers too, using a pot at least 6 inches deep with drainage holes.
With their quick growth and easy care, green onions are a rewarding and versatile crop for any garden. Enjoy their fresh flavor in countless dishes.
