The 5 things you should never do when caring for an orchid

1. Never Overwater Overwatering is the most common mistake orchid owners make. Orchids only need to be watered about once a week, allowing the potting mix to almost completely dry out between waterings.

Overwatering leads to root rot which can kill the plant. Signs of overwatering include yellow, mushy leaves and black, rotting roots

2. Avoid Direct Sunlight Orchids need bright, indirect light but direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. Place them in an east-facing window or use sheer curtains to filter intense sunlight.

3. Don't Use Regular Potting Soil Regular potting soil holds too much moisture and lacks the aeration orchid roots need.

Instead, use a well-draining orchid potting mix made from ingredients like bark, perlite, charcoal and sphagnum moss

4. Never Repot While Blooming Repotting an orchid while it's in bloom puts too much stress on the plant. Wait until after the blooms fade to repot, as the plant needs to divert its energy to adjusting to the new pot rather than maintaining flowers.

5. Avoid Low Humidity Orchids thrive in humid environments between 55-75%. In dry climates or during winter, use a pebble tray, humidifier or mist the leaves regularly to increase humidity around the plant
