Hummingbirds start appearing in the southern USA as early as February, particularly in Texas and Florida, due to warmer temperatures during their migration from Central America.
In the eastern USA, including states like Georgia and the Carolinas, late March to May is ideal for observing as they arrive to nest and feed during spring.
The Midwest sees hummingbirds from April through July. They are attracted to blooming flowers and feeders, making this a prime time for birdwatching in states like Illinois and Ohio.
The Rocky Mountain region, including Colorado and Utah, enjoys peak hummingbird activity from May to September, as the birds migrate through these areas during warmer months.
For the West Coast, particularly California, hummingbirds are present nearly year-round, but their numbers increase significantly between April and August during peak migration.
In the Pacific Northwest, such as Oregon and Washington, you can observe these birds from late April to early September, as they settle in during the warmer months.
During cold nights, they enter a hibernation-like state, called torpor, to stay warm.
